Institutions With 2,200 Faculty members and scientific collaborators, the University of Lausanne (UNIL) offers a wide range of high quality undergraduate and post-graduate courses to nearly 12’000 students. Situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, the University of Lausanne teaches business, law, social sciences, literature, theology, biology and medicine. The Universityof Lausanne is associated with the “Centre hospitalier universitaire Vaudois” (CHUV) for training and research in the medical field. The CHUV is part of a wide network of local and national Hospitals covering all fields of medicine. With more than 8300 employees, including around 1’500 involved in research, the main functions of the CHUV are to serve as general hospital for the Lausanne area, a healthcare reference, and a tertiary care provider for a population of approximately 600’000. In order to face more efficiently the new challenges in training and research in biology and medicine, biologists and physicians joined their strengths and resources through the creation in 2003 of a common structure: the Faculty of Biology and Medicine. With 300 research units employing over 600 PhD students, the FBM carries out a wide range of teaching and research activities in biology and medicine within UNIL and CHUV. While the life sciences represent the majority of inventions, the technology transfer office is at the service of all faculties of the University of Lausanne. With the shared Technology Transfer Office, the UNIL and CHUV reinforce their relations with the local and international economy.
